Dental insurance billers are responsible for – maintaining current insurance practices, requirements, and forms; verifying proper reimbursement is received for services provided; processing and following up insurance claims; and documenting and coding information, interpreting medical records.
Primary duties of a dental insurance biller include: reviewing patient accounts and determining appropriate billing distributions; processing statements and entering information into database; and reviewing past due bills and following up on past due accounts.
Most employers specify the following requirements for a dental insurance biller: at least 12 months previous experience with all aspects of revenue cycle management; the ability to add a stack of checks accurately without looking at the key pad; keyboarding skill of 55 wpm; understanding the lingo on explanation of benefits and having payment posting experience; experience in dealing with insurance companies and being able to work around their stall tactics and get claims paid; customer service skills in talking with patients about their accounts.
To arrive at the ideal candidate for the post of a dental insurance biller, employers look for the following skills in interested applicants: excellent clerical skills - advanced typing, fast and accurate; excellent communication skills – written and oral; ease of working on the phone and helping with general office duties where needed; good problem solving skills; excellent attention to detail & ability to stay current with policy changes; and expertise in medical billing and/or collections.
