The healthcare industry is one of the largest industries in the country with 14.3 million jobs workers, not to mention that it will also generate 3.4 million jobs through 2018 despite the global recession. Indeed, when looking for abundant job openings, the very first industry to look into is the healthcare industry, of which the dental care niche is an important part of.

And among the many opportunities for job employment is as dental sales representative. Basically, the tasks and responsibilities are similar to both medical and healthcare sales representatives in that effective promotion of the company's dental care products is a must of the job. The difference lies in the types of products being promoted, which include consumer products like toothpastes, mouthwashes and dental floss as well as specialized dentist equipment like dental surgery furniture, surgical instruments and implants.

Educational Qualifications Required

Most companies hiring dental sales representatives require applicants to possess a bachelor's degree in any related field. This is because the jargon of the dental care industry can often be learned on the job unless the position being applied for is that of a licensed dentist, technologist and hygienist. The position of a dental sales representative deals more with client and customer relations instead a patient-professional relationship, thus, the lax educational requirements.

Aside from educational attainment, many companies will also require selling and marketing experience of at least 32 years preferably in the healthcare industry. Since there are protocols to be followed amongst medical professionals, previous experience is important. Also, it is essential to demonstrate the ability to develop continuous professional relationship with said medical professionals and other clients.

Other equally important qualifications are valid driver's license with satisfactory driving history precisely because travel from one hospital and clinic to the next is part of the job. Keep in mind that the dental industry is a smaller version of the general medical industry so dental sales representatives often have to cover larger geographical areas.

Applicants must be able to work with software applications such as MS Word, Excel and Outlook as well as navigate the Internet.

Trainings Required

Many dental sales representatives should also demonstrate the ability to clearly present technical instructions in an operating room environment for the surgical-dental equipment being sold. Practical instructions are also necessary for the dental professionals to fully understand how to use the oral hygiene products and instruments in a clinical setting.

Most companies provide for training for hired dental sales representatives. However, it is an advantage to possess personal and professional qualities like the ability to develop and present business plans and promotions to both company management and client base. This is because the job often requires responsibility for sales growth over the area assigned, thus, the need to be an independent worker.

Aside from the basic salary, dental sales representatives are also provided with medical, dental and ophthalmologic benefits, pension plans, 401(k) plan, travel allowances and other benefits depending on the company. And so, when it comes to job employment, consider going into the field of dental care where job openings are a-plenty especially as a dental sales representative.
