The Dental Hygienist cleans calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums using dental instruments under the direct supervision of a dentist. Additionally, the Dental Hygienist feels lymph nodes under patient's chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer, and feels and visually examines gums for sores and signs of disease. Moreover, this employee provides clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health.Performs root planning and procedures that smooth and clean the root of the tooth. Takes and develops dental X-rays to help diagnose problems. Performs prophylaxis, oral irrigation, fluoride treatments, and sealants to help prevent cavities. Educates patients on how to prevent dental problems, emphasizing the importance of good nutrition, proper brushing, and regular dental check-ups. Assists dentist with procedures. Maintains records on dental status of patients and services rendered. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and requisition supplies. Attends seminars and training to enhance knowledge and to keep abreast of new technologies in the dental hygienist field. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, per federal and state guidelines and regulations. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: Associate's degree is required. Certification in relevant specialty or field. One year of relevant work experience.
