The Advanced General Dentistry Clinic and the Student Clinics in the School of Dentistry at the University of Washington has an excellent opportunity for a Dental Hygienist.

The Dental Hygienist in this position is responsible for performing oral prophylaxis, conducting a dental hygiene education program, and performing expanded dental hygiene duties delegated by a dentist.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs primary dental hygiene duties including: reviews patient health history; conducts preliminary oral examination including periodontal charting; takes intra-oral photographs; takes vital signs; performs oral prophylaxis including sub-gingival and supra-gingival scaling, root planning, periodontal maintenance and soft tissue curettage; applies fluoride treatments and sealants;

• Exposes and processes X rays; performs dental prophylaxis; performs preliminary oral examinations;

• Educates patient in oral hygiene, including dietary analysis; performs periodontal charting;

• Injects local anesthetic for restorative and surgical procedures and scaling and root planing

• Administers nitrous oxide oxygen analgesia;

• Performs root planning and soft tissue curettage;

• Places cement base; places amalgam matrix bands and wedge; condenses and carves amalgam restorations;

• Adjusts occlusion following removal of rubber dam; adapts celluloid matrices for placement of composite resins; inserts and finishes composite resin restorations;

• Participates in scheduling appointments for hygienist and dentist;

• Works with billing department to ensure accurate coding of procedures and billing is done properly;

• Responsible for sterilization procedures of equipment for patients in the clinic;

• Participates in education of dental residents and dental hygiene students when applicable;

• Performs efficient treatment and stays on time for appointments;

• Actively researches and understands medical conditions of patients as we see many medically compromised patients;

• Performs other work as required.


• A valid Washington State license as Dental Hygienist.

• Ability to render prophylactic and non-surgical periodontal scaling and root planning as ordered by a dentist.

• Knowledge of principles, techniques, terminology, and practices of dental hygiene; normal and abnormal conditions of the mouth; community health organizations and agencies concerned with dental health; preventive dental health services.

• Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with professional and lay groups; speak effectively before groups and present information in a clear and concise manner; render prophylactic treatment to patients; perform expanded dental hygiene duties.

• A valid Washington State license as Dental Hygienist.

A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
