Job Summary:Under close supervision and according to established procedures, performs routine basic nursing procedures necessary to provide for care, comfort and safety of patients. Takes vital signs, assists patients with personal hygiene, feeds and ambulates patients, and so forth according to detailed procedures. Cares for adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients with a variety of medical/surgical problems at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and nontraditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds. Essential Duties:

Provides for care, comfort and safety of assigned patients under close direction of registered nurse. In doing so, positions patients, performs complete and partial baths, oral hygiene, ambulation and so forth, makes beds, etc
Performs and records basic nursing care procedures such as enemas, collection of routine specimens, vital signs, intake and output, foley care and daily weights in accordance to detailed procedures.
Observes patients and reports reactions or changes in condition to appropriate nursing personnel
Answers call lights to determine patient needs, responds to patient requests, and/or relays to RN or LPN responsible for patient's care. Transfers patients, beds and patient care equipment to other rooms, adhering to safety precautions
Completes various errands as requested such as retrieving and delivering supplies, pharmaceuticals, x-rays, specimens, instruments, test results, and so forth.
Cleans overbed table daily, sterilizes telephone, bedside table, empties patient wastebasket. At time of dismissal, strips patient bed. Periodically cleans refrigerator, Nurse Station, report booth, and dictation booths, etc.
Transports dismissed patients from patient room to vehicle, making appropriate stops according to dismissal procedure. Goes over patient clothing list with patient.
Transports patients from Admissions and Emergency area to patient room, as appropriate.
Provides for nutritional needs of patients by preparing patient and tray appropriately, feeding patients and/or assisting as necessary.
Stocks whirlpool and shower rooms with linen.
Passes scheduled snacks to patients.
Attends Unit Meetings and hospital in-services as required by Unit Director.
Performs restorative nursing cares and charts daily for those patients.

· Ability to read in order to interpret type and level of patient care ordered, to write in order to record procedures performed, to understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care, and to perform simple arithmetic calculations in order to take and record patients' weight and vital signs. This education is normally acquired by completion of at least two years of high school.
 
License/Certification
· State of Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant certification required. Additional unit-specific knowledge is obtained through orientation, checklists and competency testing.
· Basic Life Support required within 60 days of hire.
 
Experience
· Approximately one month on-the-job experience necessary to gain knowledge of basic patient care procedures, to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit procedures and schedules, and to appropriately operate computer charting system.
 
Skills
· Interpersonal skills necessary in order to exchange factual information with patients, visitors, and nursing personnel in a courteous manner, and to allay apprehensions of patients and visitors.
· Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for up to 30% of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
· Analytical skills necessary in order to organize work, gather and interpret routine data regarding patient assessments, transports, and maintain routine records.
